PROGRAM TOPIC: AN OVERVIEW OF NON-PARENTAL CHILD CUSTODY, INCLUDING GRANDPARENT RIGHTS, WITH A FOCUS ON MEDIATED RESOLUTION APPROACHES
PRESENTER: DEBBIE WEECKS, ATTORNEY at LAW
Debbie has practiced law for 31 years, 27 of those from her home office. She also has served municipal court appointments as a Judge Pro Tem over the past twenty years.
Debbie’s law practice is non-traditional. Her emphasis in on quality representation and personal service. She is a sole practitioner whose practice includes limited scope (discrete task) representation when ethically appropriate and traditional (full) representation. Debbie’s practice spans many areas, including probate, family law, guardianships and conservatorships, exploitation of vulnerable adults, drafting advance directives, as well as other case types. Her first case out of law school was a three year, highly contested child custody case which provided a foundation for her current interest in helping parents to focus on their children’s best interests.
Debbie participates in a wide range of State Bar and community outreach projects and she has written a number of published articles. The July issue of the Maricopa Lawyer featured her article, A Primer---Arizona’s New Protective Order Landscape. Debbie is co-author of the ethics essay (still pending publication for the Barristers & Baseball CLE). Debbie co-organizes an annual CLE Marathon and this year she is scheduled to co-present on Third Party Custody. She previously served as Chair of the State Bar Sole Practitioner’s/Small Firms Section and she received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the SPSF State Bar Executive Council in 2007. For the past three months she has been an operator on the State Bar’s Covid-19 hotline three times per week. She also publishes regular newsletters on important legal and related topics which can be found on her website, www.weeckslaw.com.
